Shotover Jet: 25 Minutes in the Only Canyon Nobody Else Can Enter

This is the shortest headline activity in Queenstown, and the honest way to plan it is by the trip rather than the ride. The operator publishes three numbers and they are worth setting against each other before you pick a departure, because the difference between self-driving and taking the free shuttle is 45 minutes of your day for no money either way.

Is 25 minutes worth it?

At $116.20 (NZ$199) an adult, the ride works out at roughly $4.65 a minute on the water, which is more per minute than anything else in this valley including the bungy. Say that first, because half the reviews that complain about this trip are really complaining that nobody told them the number.

What you get for it is a thing no competitor can sell. Shotover Jet is the only company permitted to operate in the narrow Shotover Canyons, which is a concession rather than a marketing line, and the sensation the ride is built on comes from proximity: at 90 km/h in a canyon whose walls are close enough to read, speed feels like speed in a way it does not on open water. The boats are custom-built for shallow water and the drivers are trained for that specific stretch.

Our position is that it is worth it if you treat it as the canyon rather than the boat ride. If what you want is time on the water, the same money buys far more of it elsewhere: the Kawarau rafting and jet boat half-day runs four and a half hours for $192.57 and includes a 25-minute jet boat transfer of its own. If what you want is the canyon, this is the only ticket that goes in.

The mistake that costs people their seat

Your booked time is your departure time, not your check-in time. The operator states this explicitly in its FAQ because it evidently happens often enough to need saying, and the consequence is spelled out in the terms: failure to check in on time may result in your seat being forfeited with no refund.

The two numbers are 30 minutes if you are driving to the river base and 45 minutes if you are meeting the shuttle in town. Add the 10-minute drive from central Queenstown on top of the first one. The lockers, the safety briefing and the life jackets all happen inside that window, so it is not padding.

The boat leaves from a beach on the Shotover River below Arthurs Point and runs upstream into the canyons, close enough to the rock that the walls are the point rather than the scenery. Top speed is up to 90 km/h and the boats are purpose-built to run in shallow water, which is what allows the driver to hold a line most craft could not take at all. The 360-degree spin is the signature move and it happens more than once.

A driver runs commentary through the ride on the local history, the geology and the Maori history of the valley, and a boat carries up to 14 passengers plus the driver. Life jackets are mandatory and provided. Handrails are heated in winter, which reads as a gimmick until you have done 90 km/h down a canyon in July, when Queenstown averages a daily maximum of 4.4 degrees Celsius.

Will you get wet, and what to wear

Yes, a bit. The operator's own answer is that getting a little wet is part of it, and its advice to anyone worried is to sit in the centre seats of the boat. It does not provide spray jackets and recommends you bring a waterproof layer yourself, which is the single most useful thing on this page for anyone arriving straight off a plane with a light jacket.

Dress for the weather rather than for the water: there is real windchill at 90 km/h, sunglasses help year-round, and in winter warm layers, a hat and gloves change the ride. Electronic devices go in the free lockers at the Beach Reception Unit before boarding, which are shared with the rest of your boat, so the operator asks you to leave valuables at your accommodation.

Photos are not included, and that is unusual here

This is worth stating plainly because the other adventure operators in this valley include media in the price and this one does not. Shotover Jet says its photo packages are being updated, that media is captured whenever possible, and that availability may vary while the new system is tested, and it asks you to talk to the team at check-in. In other words, on the day you go there may or may not be photographs of you, and they are a purchase rather than an inclusion.

You can film it yourself within limits. Hands-free cameras must be mounted on a forehead strap or clipped to a hat, and the approved list is the GoPro, the Sony Action Cam and the Insta360 GO. Chest mounts, wrist mounts and selfie sticks are all banned because they interfere with other passengers. Head straps can be rented at the base building. Phones and small cameras can travel with you but must stay in a pocket while the boat is moving, hands free at all times, and come out only when the driver says the boat has stopped.

There is no minimum age on the Shotover Jet. There is a minimum height of 1 metre, and the operator reserves the right to raise it to 1.2 metres when weather and river conditions on the day require. That second sentence is the one to plan around: a child who clears the bar comfortably at home may not clear it on a high-water morning in October, and the operator's own advice is to check the website or phone 0800 SHOTOVER on the morning of your visit if your child is anywhere near the mark.

Under-5s ride free on an infant ticket provided they meet the height minimum, but the ticket has to be added when you book and cannot be added at check-in, which is an easy and expensive thing to get wrong. Under-10s must travel in the same boat as a fare-paying adult aged 16 or over. Children of 10 to 15 may ride without an adult in the boat, but a parent or guardian of 16 or over has to be physically present at the river base.

Weight, mobility and the two-support-people rule

There is no weight limit at all, which distinguishes this from every bungy product in the district. What there is instead is a functional test: every passenger must fit into one of the life jackets and be able to get in and out of the boat independently. If you need help boarding, the operator asks you to bring two support people who are booked on the same trip and pay full fare.

Anyone using a wheelchair, or with breaks, fractures, back or neck issues or other medical conditions, is asked to contact the team directly before booking and at least 48 hours before travelling. Is it safe, and how to check rather than trust

Shotover Jet has operated commercially on this river since 1965 and says its operations meet Maritime New Zealand safety standards. You do not have to take that on trust. Commercial adventure activity operators in New Zealand must be registered with WorkSafe, and registration requires passing an independent safety audit; the public register at services.worksafe.govt.nz lists each operator, the activities it is authorised to provide, the period covered and a status of Current, Suspended or Cancelled. Providing an adventure activity without registration is an offence.

The other half of the system is ACC, the national no-fault accident scheme, which covers everyone including visitors who are injured in an accident in New Zealand, regardless of fault or residency, with the claim lodged by your health provider. What it does not cover is illness, disrupted travel plans or getting you home, which is ACC's own stated reason for telling visitors to buy travel insurance anyway. The river base is at 3 Arthurs Point Road, a 7 km drive from central Queenstown that the operator puts at about 10 minutes. The route is up Shotover Street and along Gorge Road towards Arthurs Point and Coronet Peak; immediately after you cross the Edith Cavell Bridge the entrance is on the left. Parking is free on site, along with lockers, toilets, a retail shop and viewing areas from which you can watch the boats without riding.

The alternative is the free shuttle, which runs from central Queenstown for selected departure times and can be selected as you book. Check in at the main entrance of the Station Building, 25 Shotover Street, 45 minutes before your ride, and allow 1 hour 45 minutes from check-in to drop-off. Your seat back to town is reserved for 15 minutes after your ride, which gives you time for the shop and for whatever photos exist. Spectators can travel on the shuttle on a space-available basis, but those seats cannot be reserved online and have to be arranged by phone or email.

The Onsen hot pools are next door

This is the reason to make one trip out of two. The Onsen Hot Pools sit at 160 Arthurs Point Road, on the same road as the jet boat base and 10 km from central Queenstown, in private cedar pools with retractable roofs over the Shotover River at about 38.3 degrees Celsius. A 25-minute jet boat run followed by an hour in a hot pool above the same river is the best-shaped half-day in the district, and it turns a very short activity into an afternoon.

One caution, and it is the operator's own: Onsen is heavily booked out most days, bookings are per pool rather than per person, and cancelling inside 24 hours costs the full price. Where the road goes after that

Arthurs Point is the mouth of a much bigger story. Keep going up the road and you reach Skippers Canyon, the gold-rush route above the same river, and the half-day rafting trip that runs the Shotover's grade 3 to 5 water goes in by bus down that road, ending with the run through the 550-foot Oxenbridge Tunnel. That trip is four and a half hours against this one's 25 minutes, on the same river, for $175.01.

The same road also climbs to Coronet Peak, so in winter an early jet boat and an afternoon on the mountain fit together without ever going back through town. The operator itself points guests at the brewery beside the base if they want to change their return shuttle time. The trip runs every day of the year except Christmas Day, weather permitting, and it operates in most conditions including light rain. What stops it is heavy rainfall or flooding, and the operator says it checks river conditions every morning and updates its website through the day, so the page to open before you leave your accommodation is its own rather than a forecast.

What is more common than a cancellation is a modification. The Shotover is a dynamic river where water levels, flow and natural debris change quickly, and the operator reserves the right to adjust the route for safety, without notice, while still delivering the same trip duration and the same 360-degree spins. That is written into the terms you accept when you book, and route changes are explicitly not grounds for a refund. The high-water version of that same rule is the 1.2-metre height minimum described above.

The 24-hour rule, both ways

Cancel 24 hours or more before departure and you get a full refund. Cancel inside 24 hours, or fail to show, and a 100 percent cancellation fee applies. Arriving late enough to miss check-in can forfeit your seat with no refund. If the operator cancels the trip for safety or river conditions, you get a full refund or the option to rebook at no extra cost, and its team contacts you directly.

The branch people get wrong involves third parties. If you booked through a platform and the operator cancels, the refund is handled by the platform under its terms, not by Shotover Jet, and the same is true for a cancellation you initiate. That is the practical argument for booking direct at a price the operator says is identical either way: one party, one policy, one phone number. Gift vouchers expire three years from purchase.
